Infrared Moisture Detection
Indoor Air Quality Services, Inc. (dba IAQ Services) provides infrared moisture detection, performed by a Certified Indoor Environmentalist (C.I.E.), to find hidden moisture and recommend a resolution. We serve New Orleans and the surrounding parishes with infrared moisture detection and other complementary services.
What Is Infrared Moisture Detection?
Infrared moisture detection is a way to find and assess moisture inside building materials and structures without touching or damaging them.
The technique uses infrared cameras and thermal imaging devices to detect temperature differences on surfaces. Wet areas are usually cooler than dry ones, so these differences point to where moisture is hiding.
How Infrared Cameras Find Hidden Moisture
When wood, insulation or drywall gets wet, it holds and releases heat differently than it does when dry. An infrared camera records these differences as thermal images, and the cooler spots show where water may be present.
Common Sources of Moisture in Buildings
Moisture can enter a building from many sources. These include roof and window leaks, plumbing failures, condensation from HVAC systems, flooding, and the high humidity common across South Louisiana.
Hidden moisture often goes unnoticed until it causes visible damage. By then, wood may have rotted, insulation may have lost its effectiveness, and mold may have spread behind walls, under floors or above ceilings.
Excess moisture is one of the main causes of mold growth and poor indoor air quality. Finding it early is one of the most effective ways to protect both your building and the people inside it.
When Infrared Moisture Detection Is Used
Infrared detection is useful whenever moisture needs to be found without damaging the structure, as in building inspections. Because it is non-destructive and covers large areas quickly, it is well suited to checking for water damage, mold risk and insulation problems.
Infrared Detection and Mold Remediation
IAQ Services professionals use infrared cameras to find the moisture source that is feeding mold growth. Once we know where water is entering or collecting, we can aim the remediation at that spot and fix the underlying cause, not just the symptoms.
FAQs
-
No. An infrared camera reads the surface temperature of walls, floors and ceilings. Moisture behind or inside a material changes that surface temperature, and the camera picks up the difference. This lets us find wet areas without opening up the wall.
-
No. The inspection is non-invasive and doesn’t require drilling, cutting or removing materials. If we need to confirm a reading, we may use a moisture meter. A pin-type meter can leave very small holes, but a pinless meter leaves no marks.
-
Not always. Cool spots can also come from missing insulation, air leaks or HVAC airflow. That’s why we confirm suspicious areas with moisture meters before making recommendations.
-
Consider an inspection after a leak, flood or storm, or if you notice musty odors, stains, peeling paint or warped materials. It also makes sense before buying a property, before mold remediation, and after repairs to confirm that the area has dried out.
